Structure is Required for Creativity

"I don't think that scheduling is uncreative.
I think that structure is required for creativity."

~ Twyla Tharp

Sketching Every Day / Drawing Every Day  •  DAYS #  11-32

Day 11
Watercolor and Ink Sketch • Getting Ready for tomorrow's Live Zoom Class! K.I.S.S. with me! “The most complicated thing for people is simplicity.” ~ Meir Ezra

Day 12
Watercolor and Ink Sketch • "The person who moves a mountain begins
by carrying away small stones.” ~ Confucius

Day 13
Watercolor and Ink Sketch • “It’s only after you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.” — Roy T. Bennett  This was done during our live Zoom Class on Saturday.

Day 14
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” ~ Les Brown
This drawing was inspired by one of my Philadelphia Flower Show pics. It took me hours to draw. I don't have that much time (or patience) for it anymore. I started out doing this technique quite often during my early summers (2006 - 2007) of #drawingeveryday / #sketchingeveryday. To speed up the process, I developed a wash technique for rendering values (see the free video) which is SO MUCH faster.

Day 15
Watercolor & Ink Sketch • “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” ~ Theodore Roosevelt

Day 16
Blind Contour Drawing - Some items from around the house.

Day 17
“For me, art has always been a welcome escape to a beautiful world when life gets to be too much.” ~ Sandy Sandy We are doing hummingbirds in a nest and this is one of the techniques I'll be demonstrating this Saturday in our Zoom Class.

Day 18
“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” – Theodore Roosevelt  • I will be sketching every day and posting my results periodically here on Facebook in chronological order and here on: https://www.sketchingeveryday.com in reverse chronological (blog format) order. I hope my efforts inspire you to sketch more!

 Day 19
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis •
This #watercolorsketch was done on regular drawing paper. We will be creating nesting #hummingbirds in our Zoom Class today - 6-19-21.

Day 20
"When creativity has become your habit; when you've learned to manage time, resources, expectations, and the demands of others; when you understand the value and place of validation, continuity, and purity of purpose, then you're on the way to an artist's ultimate goal; the achievement of mastery." ~ Twyla Tharp  •  One of my demos from our live Zoom Class on Saturday, 6-19-21.

Day 21
"Without passion, all the skill in the world won't lift you above craft. Without skill, all the passion in the world will leave you eager but floundering. Combining the two is the essence of the creative life." ~ Twyla Tharp • Another watercolor sketch from Saturday's Zoom class.

 Day 22
"If art is the bridge between what you see in your mind and what the world sees, then skill is how you build that bridge." ~ Twyla Tharp • Another demo from last Saturday's Zoom class.

Day 23
"To make real change, you have to be well anchored - not only in the belief that it can be done but also in some pretty real ways about who you are and what you can do. It's vital to establish some rituals-automatic but decisive patterns of behavior at the beginning of the creative process, when you are most at peril of turning back, chickening out, giving up, or going the wrong way." ~ Twyla Tharp  •  Another demo from last Saturday's Zoom class

Day 24
“Reading, conversation, environment, culture, heroes, mentors, nature – all are lottery tickets for creativity. Scratch away at them and you’ll find out how big a prize you’ve won." ~ Twyla Tharp ⁣⁣ Take your art to the next level and refine your style! Day 25
“Creativity is more about taking the facts, fictions, and feelings we store away and finding new ways to connect them. What we're talking about here is metaphor. Metaphor is the lifeblood of all art if it is not art itself. Metaphor is our vocabulary for connecting what we are experiencing now with what we have experienced before. It's not only how we express what we remember, it's how we interpret it - for ourselves and others." ~ Twyla Tharp ⁣⁣ Take your art to the next level and refine your style! Day 29
“In the end, there is no ideal condition for creativity. What works for one person is useless for another. The only criterion is this: Make it easy on yourself. Find a working environment where the prospect of wrestling with your muse doesn't scare you, doesn't shut you down. It should make you want to be there, and once you find it, stick with it. To get the creative habit, you need a working environment that's habit-forming. All preferred working states, no matter how eccentric, have one thing in common: When you enter into them, they compel you to get started." ~ Twyla Tharp ⁣💖⁣ Take your art to the next level and refine your style!
